It’s back to the drawing board for the Muskego-Norway School District as voters in last week’s special referendum election voted no on the $29.9 million building/consolidation plan.

With 29 percent of the registered voters showing up to decide the issue, the referendum was voted down by a nearly 2-1 margin.

“While it’s disappointing, we do respect the community’s vote from yesterday’s election,” said Dr. Joe Schroeder, district superintendent.

The referendum called for the consolidation of the district’s five elementary schools into four, retiring the Tess Corners and Muskego elementary schools and building a new elementary school, expansion and renovation of Mill Valley Elementary, funds to maintain of Country Meadows Elementary and Bay Lane Middle schools including the construction of new and separate main entrances for the schools, and replacing the heating, cooling and ventilation systems at Lakeview Elementary along the with construction of a new gym and entrance.

“It’s a pretty comprehensive set of needs and that’s what makes it a challenge,” said Schroeder. “We still have significant facility needs that didn’t go away (with the failed vote).”

The School Board will meet Nov. 21 assess the situation and the community’s decision and begin discussions as to it’s next move.

“It’s a continuing process and the board will still have to find a way to gather community support to ultimately address the needs we have,” said Schroeder.
