Area church to stage Christmas musical

Steve Dixon (from left), Duane Thur, Steve Thorngate, and Spencer Dickman rehearse the opening scene of "Come Worship the King," to be presented Dec. 3, 9, and 10 at Mt. Zion Christian Church, Lake Geneva.

Mt. Zion Christian Church will present a musical drama, “Come Worship the King,” on Saturday, Dec. 3, Friday, Dec. 9, and Saturday, Dec.10.

Performances will begin at 7 p.m. at the church, 2330 Highway 120, Lake Geneva. There is no charge for admission, and nursery care will be provided.

The musical, introduced in 1990, is the creation of Mt. Zion’s associate pastor Stephen Thorngate. It tells the traditional Christmas story from the Bible using drama, song, and dance. This year marks its sixth presentation.

“Come Worship the King” features a cast of more than 60 children and adults performing original music in a wide variety of styles, along with familiar Christmas carols. Although the play has seen a number of changes and additions over the years, it retains its popular barbershop quartet, a signature feature of all of Thorngate’s musicals.

Savanna Adams, McHenry, Ill., will appear as Mary and Spencer Dickman, Walworth, will create the role of Joseph. Kay Clement, Burlington, will portray Mary’s mother. Scott Johnson, Lake Geneva, will play the angel Gabriel.

The wise men will be brought to life by Seth Bahr and Steve Bahr, Lyons; Jon Thorngate, Elkhorn; and Steve Thorngate, Burlington.
