Sophie ‘Sherry’ Deutsch, 92, Burlington, died April 13, 2014, at Arbor View Communities, Burlington, surrounded by her family.

She was born in Milwaukee on May 14, 1921, to the late Joseph and Sophie (Svitek) Hromada. She spent her early and young adult life on the north side of Milwaukee and enjoyed sewing, dancing, roller and ice-skating, as well as other social activities in her free time. She worked as an executive secretary at Wisconsin Bell, Inc., until her marriage in 1947.

She met her future husband at the old Palomar skating rink in Milwaukee before he left for war. They parted ways and met again after he returned from service. They were a love story. Sophie and Michael Joseph Deutsch were married Oct. 25, 1947, at St. Stephen’s in Milwaukee. They made their home in Cudahy and then retired to Mesa, Ariz. She was a homemaker and loved to cook and bake. Above all, her husband, family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her world.

She was further preceded in death by Michael on May 4, 1996, and two sons, Gerald and Richard.

Survivors include her children, Michael (Mary) Deutsch, Burlington, Mary (William) Lewis, Kenosha, Barbara Deutsch, Fort Collins, Colo., Joseph Deutsch, Santa Cruz, Calif., Lawrence Deutsch, Paradise Valley, Ariz.; a sister, Emilie Borgmann; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the staff at Arbor View, Allay Hospice, and Terri Rubacek PT for their care and compassion.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, April 16, at 5:30 p.m., at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Lyons, with the Rev. John Baumgartner presiding. Burial is Thursday, April 17, at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery at 10 a.m. Visitation is at the church on April 16 from 4-5:30 p.m. Schuette-Daniels Funeral Home & Crematory, Burlington, is serving the family.
