For the first time in school history, the Catholic Central golf team will advance to the WIAA sectionals next Wednesday at Black Wolf Run in Kohler.

“This has been an amazing group to work with over the past year,” said coach Matt DeLorme. “They have become a very cohesive unit that has worked very hard for this.”

The Toppers finished fourth overall in their 10-team regional, three strokes ahead of Heritage Christian for the final qualifying spot.

The Racine Prairie regional was held Tuesday at Ives Grove Golf Course in Sturtevant.

“This group of individuals spent a lot of extra time preparing for this meet, and the work has by far paid off,” DeLorme continued. “Just a month ago we shot 421 at the county meet here. We cut down an amazing 42 to shoot a 379 at conference last week and then were able to save a few more shots out there to post a 359 today.”

Jeff Stemper led the Toppers with a round of 75, third best in the meet and just four strokes behind medalist Jack Murphy of Dominican and one shot behind runner-up Adam Gabby from St. Catherine’s.

“Jeff is a leader by example,” DeLorme said. “He will always stay late to work on his short game, and that is being seen by the other golfers on the team and they’ve followed suit.”

While Stemper is always in the hunt for medalist honors, to achieve team success other members need to step up. Senior Steve Schwenn, who had never shot below 90, posted a personal best with an 88. Follow classmate Jack DeSmidt also recorded a personal best with a 100.

A pair of underclassmen, Sophomore Sean Kramer and Freshman Bryce Hocking, have added sparks throughout the year and are playing well at the right time for Catholic Central.
