With six weight class champions, the Burlington High School wrestling team dominated the Nicolet Knight Wrestling Scramble Saturday at Nicolet High School in Milwaukee.

The Demon boys tallied 565 points to easily outscore second-place Wausau East, which had 483.5 points.

“It wasn’t an overly tough group (of teams),” noted head coach Jade Gribble. “It was a good tournament for us.”

Gribble noted that he was able to take a lot of wrestlers, giving some second-stringers some mat time.

Taking first place in their respective weight classes were seniors Derek Gill (126 pounds), Matt Ehlen (132), Willie Ehlen (152), Brandt Gavin (160), Ryan Jazdzewski (170) and Neal Miller (285).

Gill, Jazdzewski and Miller each pinned their five opponents.

Matt Ehlen had the toughest championship match, defeating Wausau East’s Brook Whitehead in overtime 3-1. In earlier matches, Matt Ehlen had two pins, a major decision and a decision.

Willie Ehlen had four pins and a major decision, while Gavin tallied one pin, two major decisions and two decisions.

The Demons almost got a seventh champion at 195 pounds where sophomore Greg Miller lost 7-3 in the title match. Miller had opened with two byes, then pinned his next two opponents before losing to Martin Luther’s Austin Hoeg.

The Demon grapplers began the season with a 56-15 win over Delavan-Darien in a Southern Lakes Conference dual Dec. 1 at Burlington.

Miller, Matt Ehlen, Elsbury and Max Shenkenberg all won by pins. Gill had a technical fall, while Willie Ehlen, Lucas Shenkenberg (120) and Gavin won by decision.

Burlington’s three match losses came at 106 (Logan Jorgensen), 182 (Jazdzewski) and 220 (Tyler Kirkeeng).

Gribble noted three matches featured strong wrestlers from both teams. That was at 152 where Willie Ehlen defeated Kiefer Bennett 6-1, at 160 where Brandt Gavin defeated Kyndle Bennett 6-0, and at 192 where Delavan’s Marcus Hudson defeated Jazdzewski 9-4.
