BRUCE L. McNEEL

Easter Lily      Bruce Laird McNeel, 59, died June 11, 2014, at his home in Houston, Texas, after battling cancer.

He was born Nov. 4, 1954, to Laird and Dorothy L. (Clausen) McNeel in Burlington. He grew up in Burlington and graduated cum laude from the University of Wisconsin with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology in 1978.

He was the vice president of Beta Beta Chemistry Biological Honor Society. He served as team captain of his college tennis team. His love for tennis continued throughout his life. He worked as a professional tennis instructor at Manitou Inn and Tennis Club, Ontario, Canada.

After college he worked as a landscaping engineer with ABW Landscaping. In 1980 he moved to Texas. He worked as a geotechnician in Giddings, where he was responsible for scientific collection and analysis of geological well site data. After working in the Texas sun for a few years, he went on to law school. He graduated from South Texas College of Law earning his doctor of jurisprudence degree in 1984.

He married Cherie Savignac. Together they had one son, Scott. He practiced law in Harris County for over 30 years, focusing primarily on family and probate law.

His interests and hobbies included watching sports, music, hiking and biking. He was an avid and voracious reader, a passion he inherited from his dad and mom.

He truly lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures, and some of his favorite times were in watching a good tennis match, having lunch with friends, and hiking or cycling through national parks.

Survivors include his son, Scott; grandson, Gavin; brother, Mark; sisters, Jean, Barbara, Judith, Mary, Kathy), and beloved former spouse and friend, Cherie McNeel; as well as nieces and nephews.

He had an uncanny ability to reach people in a deep and positive way. He will be remembered and missed.
