The Waterford High School girls golf team needed no validation they are among the elite teams in southeast Wisconsin, but now there is proof.

Even in the midst of a tough day, the Wolverines finished third in the Racine County Invitational Sept. 8 at Ives Grove Golf Links in Sturtevant.

Waterford and Racine Case tied for third. Each finished with an 18-hole total of 379. The Wolverines posted that finish on a day when coach Jon Leonard said they did not play to their potential.

“Overall, it wasn’t our best day, but that is golf,” Leonard said. “There will be ups and downs. We had been very consistent all year, so I guess we were due for a tough scoring day.”

Brittany Raab led Waterford with an 18-hole total of 88.

“I think she can go ever lower,” Leonard said.

Breanna Bertschinger shot a 95 and Taitum Beck finished at 96. Whitney Look carded a 100 and Maddy Anderson a 105 in her first varsity meet.

Racine St. Catherine’s Sarah Busey won individual medalist honors with a 79.

The Prairie School of Racine won the team title with four-woman score of 352. Union Grove finished second (360).

St. Catherine’s finished fifth (382) and Burlington sixth (417). Racine Horlick finished seventh (443) and Racine Park eighth (529).

Waterford defeated Elkhorn 182-239 in a Southern Lakes Conference dual meet Sept. 3 at Evergreen Golf Club in Elkhorn.

“We had good scores throughout our lineup,” Leonard said. “Breanna didn’t have her best day, but she toughed it out and managed to still post a low round.

“We have the kind of depth where if someone is off their game others will pick theirs up and help us out.”

Bertschinger led all golfers (44). Taitum Beck finished at 46 and Lauren Torhorst at 47. Whitney Look carded a 52.

Riley Shirk posted the Elks’ low round (52).

Waterford played Burlington in a SLC dual meet Sept. 9 at Rivermoor Golf Club and Wilmot Thursday in a SLC dual meet at Twin Lakes Country Club.

The Wolverines play Westosha Central Tuesday in a SLC meet at Rivermoor.
