Council approves expanded alcohol sales hours

While it wasn’t unanimous, the City of Burlington will have new retail alcohol sales hours.

With a 5-2 vote Tuesday night, the Common Council passed a new ordinance that will allow the sale of alcohol by Class A liquor license holders starting at 6 a.m. – two hours earlier than before.

Alderman Tom Preusker had brought up the proposal two weeks ago, saying that a business owner wanted to chance to compete with other towns when people were leaving early for various trips.

“Some of the local businesses said they have lost out on customers,” Preusker said at the Sept. 2 meeting. There were objections to the plan, with Lori Pesch of the Racine County Youth Coalition (which works with Partners 2 in Burlington) saying that the two extra hours of sales could increase alcohol opportunities for teenagers to use alcohol.

Aldermen Ed Johnson and Peter Hintz were the two nay votes Tuesday night. At the Sept. 2 meeting, Johnson had questioned the morality of the change.

Other matters

The Common Council unanimously approved a certified survey map for 2600 Browns Lake Drive – the old Cottonpicker Restaurant site – to change into business offices.

The council also unanimously approved the purchase of a pair of new patrol vehicles for the City of Burlington Police. The two vehicles will be purchased from Miller Motors for a total of $54,600 plus set up, title and license fees.
