Raymond eyes long-term vision in workshops

“What are we about?” is the overarching theme of a series of workshops that will take place this fall between Raymond School District Administrator Joe Dawidziak and members of the School Board.

Dawidziak laid out plans for the series of workshops at a Sept. 15 board meeting.

As he discussed the rationale for the workshops, Dawidziak pointed out that Raymond School once was known for service learning, but over time that vision statement has been lost.

“I think we’re at a point where we need to answer the question again,” Dawidziak said.

Board members agreed with Dawidziak’s plan, particularly when the importance of relation with school staff is taken into account.

 Pay for plays

In other issues that came before the board Sept. 15,members backed a proposal to begin charging admission to school plays.

The proceeds raised will then be used to fund expenditures such as costumes, lighting and obtaining rights to reenact a particular performance.

“I know we’re not a fan of fees, but I do feel that this is something that makes sense,” Dawidziak said.

The school board voted unanimously in favor of changing school policy to charge admission to the plays.

The exact amount of the fee has been left up to organizers, but admission is expected to be in the $2-$3 range.

While board members said they understand the rationale behind Dawidziak’s recommendation, several also said there could be some push-back about the idea from the community.

“I’m not opposed to this at all,” board member Jim Wolter said. “I just want to be prepared if someone approaches me.”

Later this fall, Raymond students will be performing “The Little Mermaid.”

Halloween partner

Raymond board members briefly discussed a proposal to partner with the Town of Raymond for a Halloween-themed event for students attending the K-8 district.

In the past, the school’s PTO has initiated similar events, in part to serve as a fundraiser for different school programs.

Dawidziak said he plans to discuss the possible proposal with town officials.
