AL O. POPMA

Easter Lily      Al O. Popma, 84, Union Grove died Sept. 28, 2014, at Holton Manor, Elkhorn. He was born Sept. 9, 1930, to the late Lambertus and Djoke (Feenstra) in Bartlehiem, the Netherlands. His early life was spent in the Providence of Friesland, in the Netherlands.

On April 20, 1964, he became a natural citizen of the U.S. This was one of the proudest moments in his life.

On Nov. 19, 1976, he married Mary Ann Gabbey in Union Grove. Following marriage they resided in Union Grove. He had been employed by the Modine Manufacturing Co., as an engineer, designing machines. He was a member of Grand Lodge Free & Accepted Masons of Wisconsin, Union Grove Lodge #0288 and a member of the Lions Club. He was a very gifted and talented craftsman. He enjoyed working with both woods and metals and was very creative. He loved spending time in his shop working on various projects.

Survivors include his wife of 38 years; children, Tineke Popma, Albert (Janny) Popma and Diana (Oege) V.D. Zwaad; grandchildren, Sander and Sieta, all of the Netherlands; nieces; nephews; other relatives and a host of friends.

He was further preceded in death by his siblings, Freerk Popma, Tamme Popma, Anna Kloosterman Popma and Siemen Popma.

The family would like to express their thanks to Peter Vlieger, Harvey Reed, Bob Blunck, Bob Orre and many other friends for all their love and support. Also, a special heartfelt thank you to the staff at Holton Manor and Rainbow Hospice for all their care and compassion in caring for Al.

Al’s wishes were to be cremated and for his final resting place be flown back to his home, in the Netherlands. A memorial gathering will take place for family and friends at a later date. Polnasek-Daniels Funeral Home & Crematory, Union Grove, is serving the family.
