If the Burlington High School girls tennis team wins one more match over two days of competition, the Demons are headed to the WIAA Division 1 State Tennis Team Championships Oct. 24 and 25 at the University of Wisconsin.

“It could have been any match that got us a point,” Demons coach Rose Dolatowski said. “It just wasn’t meant to be.”

Burlington missed its second straight appearance at team state by one point Oct. 8 at the WIAA Division 1 Sectional Tournament at Burlington High School.

Lake Geneva won the sectional title and advanced to team state. Burlington and Waterford finished tied for second.

“That’s not so bad,” Dolatowski said. “It gives the SLC a little credibility – that we were the top three teams out of that entire sectional. I like that.”

Burlington’s No. 1 doubles team of Lydia Crabtree and Hannah Cook won two matches at the sectional and advanced to the state individual tennis tournament, which starts Thursday and concludes Saturday at the University of Wisconsin.

Crabtree and Cook beat Janesville Craig’s Sierra Reese and Sara Runde 6-2, 6-2 in the third-place match to secure a trip to state. It is Crabtree’s second trip to state and Cook’s first.

“It’s Hannah’s first trip even going to see it as a spectator,” Dolatowski said. “It will be a little bit of an overwhelming experience for her, I’m sure, but a good one.”

Crabtree and Cook opened sectional play with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Monona Grove’s Kiana Meinholz and Liz Shaver. Crabtree and Cook lost 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals to Stoughton’s Payton Kahl and Kendra Halverson.

Crabtree and Cook (22-7) play Whitefish Bay’s Jenna Marget and Ali Menard (17-13) Thursday at 2 p.m. in their first round at state.

If Crabtree and Cook win, they play KK Doering and Lane McLaughlin (20-1) of Milwaukee’s Divine Savior Holy Angels today at 9 a.m. Doering and McLaughlin are seeded sixth in the tournament. Crabtree and Cook are unseeded.

Burlington’s Emily Crabtree repeated as sectional champion in Flight 4 in singles competition. Crabtree won two matches and beat Waterford’s Hannah Zimmerman 6-2, 6-2 in the title match. Crabtree defeated Watertown’s Emily Choinski 6-1, 6-3 in her first match of the day.

Lacey Londre, in Flight 1 in singles competition, lost her only match of the day 6-4, 6-4 to Stoughton’s Sarah Bendy.

In Flight 2 in singles competition the Demons’ Sophi Grandi lost her second match in three sets to Sun Prairie’s Lats Sysouvanh. Grandi won the first set 6-4 and lost the second and third sets 6-1. Grandi beat Monona Grove’s Sarah Trimborn 7-5, 6-4 in her first match.

In Flight 2 in doubles competition, Burlington’s Amy Gilanyi and Alyssa Caliva won the first set against Monona Grove’s Emma Cosby and Rysa Weigel Sterr 6-4 before losing the second set 6-3 and third set 6-2.
