Union Grove’s Marching Broncos performed in the Novice Class, which is open to bands entering the WSMA State Marching Band Championships for the first time, and which is available for the experience only and does not garner a points rating.

The Marching Broncos’ show, entitled “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road: The Music of Elton John,” featured as musical selections “Funeral for a Friend,” “Love Lies Bleeding,” “Your Song” and “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting” in Whitewater on Saturday.

UGUHS Band Director Alex Vincer was assisted Saturday by Haley Peronto as the Color Guard instructor. Katrina Hermann served as Drum Major and the Color Guard captains were Cally Hansen and Stephanie Phillips.

“I believe that marching band is a terrific activity for everyone involved,” Vincer said afterward.

“It encourages students to always think about themselves and their actions in a team setting, and allows them to express themselves musically and artistically for a large audience.”

The UGUHS marching band program strives to instill the values of dedication, responsibility, pride and teamwork in every student’s pursuit of musical and artistic excellence, Vincer added.

“I am proud to say that this mission is evident in every single student’s performance on the football field this season, ” Vincer said.

Members of the band include:

• Horn Line: Heather Johnson, Shelby Lambdin, Heather Phillips, Thalia McKnight, Alison Schatzman, Allison Wick, Shea Vienonen, Vandana Prins, Haley Gonzalez, Lucas Bennett, William Syty, Annamarie Strohmeier, Ian Donovan, Jake Knuth, Amber Varebrook, Darren Isaacson, Nicole Scarce, Katrina Hermann, Kyle Kowalczyk, Lukas Jarstad, Nicole Whyte, Trenton Korslin, Nathan Hilarides, Emily Nurmi and Taryn Fanning;

The band’s performances are important to the Union Grove school community for the school spirit they provide and for the life lessons the performers are taught, Vincer said, adding: “We are honored to be such an important part of Union Grove High School’s student culture.”
