Demons pull away for victory

For one quarter of Dec. 8’s Southern Lakes Conference boys’ basketball game between Waterford and Burlington, it looked like it could be another night of sputtering offense for the Demons.

In fact, through eight minutes, the Demons scored just four points – and the only good thing about the first quarter was that Waterford managed just six.

Then the floodgates opened for Burlington – and with them came the strides forward BHS coach Steve Berezowitz had been waiting for his team to make this season.

The Demons went on a 20-5 run in the second quarter, limiting the Wolverines to just one field goal en route to a 56-48 victory at Waterford.

Burlington remained undefeated in the Southern Lakes Conference with the win, and following a 59-47 win over Union Grove Tuesday night, went to 3-0 and 3-2.

“It’s kind of how it’s been,” said Berezowitz. “I think right now we’re trying to find some kind of identity.”

In the second quarter, the Demons hit four 3-pointers – two each by Dexter Spieker and Tim Peterson – and finished with eight field goals to just one by the Wolverines.

From there, Burlington more or less cruised. The Demons had the game well in hand in the fourth quarter against the Wolverines, but Waterford got three 3-pointers from Zach Fisher – his only points of the game – and managed to get within six late before two free throws by Eric Gerber clinched the game.

Berezowitz conceded his team needed to find a way to finish games better Tuesday, saying what happened against Waterford was also an issue against Union Grove Tuesday.

“Our IQ sometimes at the end of the ball game isn’t where it needs to be,” Berezowitz said.
