Transportation fund referendum

There is a statewide referendum on the Nov. 4 ballot calling for the creation of a Transportation Fund to be used exclusively for funding the state’s transportation system.

Over the years, the transportation budget, which is often flush with cash, has been tapped to help balance the budget. The proposed referendum would prevent that from happening in the future.

The referendum requires any revenue generated from the state’s transportation system be deposited into the Transportation Fund and would prevent monies from being transferred out of the fund to be used in any program other than those directly administrated by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

The referendum question reads: “Creation of a Transportation Fund. Shall section 9 (2) of article IV and section 11 of article VIII of the constitution be created to require that revenues generated by use of the state transportation system be deposited into a transportation fund administered by a department of transportation for the exclusive purpose of funding Wisconsin’s transportation systems and to prohibit any transfers or lapses from this fund?”
