A 48-34 win at Wilmot Thursday kept the Burlington High School wrestling squad undefeated in Southern Lakes Conference duals this season. The boys are now 3-0 in the SLC.

Two days later, the Demons competed in the Marty Loy Classic at Fond du Lac where they fifth overall in the 25-team invitational.

In the Wilmot dual, of the 14 weight classes, 11 were decided by pin. There was one forfeit, one injury default and a major decision.

Freshman Ben Hornickle got the team off to a great start by pinning Wilmot’s Matt Wagemann in five minutes 42 seconds at 106 pounds.

After a scoreless first period, head coach Jade Gribble indicated that Hornickle did very well.

“Ben got a reversal right away in the second period and then took over,” Gribble said. “That was a huge win for him.”

Hornickle came into the dual ranked 12th in the state at 113 pounds, with Wagemann ranked ninth at 106.

Other pins for Burlington came from Lucas Shenkenberg (113), Derek Gill (126), Matt Ehlen (132), Willie Ehlen (145), Brandt Gavin (152) and Neal Miller (285). Cody Elsbury at 138 won by injury default.

“I was happy to walk out of there with a win,” Gribble noted. “We have a lot of things to work on.”
