Doris F. Karpen, 85, Waterford, died Jan. 19, 2015, at Elder Care Cottages, Waterford. She was born in Burlington on April 22, 1929, to the late Warner W. and Edna H. (Bazen) Smith. She spent her early life in Burlington where she graduated from Burlington High School.
On June 28, 1952, she married John U. Karpen. Following marriage they made their home in Spring Prairie where they raised their family. They later divorced.
She was a homemaker and had also worked at Barton’s and Spurgeon’s. She loved doing volunteer work and had donated many hours to St. Vincent de Paul in Burlington. She loved to garden, cook and bake. She always enjoyed spending time with her family and was a great teacher to her grandsons, teaching both mischievous and marvelous things.
Survivors include her children, Judy (Butch) Spaight, William Karpen, Nancy Karpen, James Karpen; grandchildren, Geoffrey Spaight, Michael Spaight, Erika (Jordan) Waech and Lynette Karpen; sister-in-law, Carole Peterson; many other relatives and friends.
She was further preceded in death by her brothers, William W. Smith and John S. Smith.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to St. Vincent de Paul, Compassionate Care Hospice or the charity of your choice.
The family would like to thank the staff with Compassionate Care Hospice and Elder Care Cottages for the wonderful care they provided.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Schuette-Daniels Funeral Home, 625 Browns Lake Drive, Burlington, on Saturday, Jan. 24, at noon with the Rev. Larry Williams officiating. Visitation for family and friends is Jan. 24, from 11 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will follow the service at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
