JOHN J. FOSTER

Easter Lily      John Joseph Foster, 81, Topsham, Vt., died Jan. 16, 2015, after a short illness. He was with his family during his illness and at his death.

He was born in Marion Ind., on Feb. 24, 1933, to the late John Morrill Foster and Eleanora Lutz Foster.

John attended schools in Marion and Wabash College, Crawfordsville Ind. He worked for Foster-Forbes Glass Company at the glass factory in Marion, as plant manager of their glass factory in Burlington, Wis., and as regional sales manager in their office, Newton Lower Falls Mass.

After retiring from the family business, founded in 1846 in Stoddard N.H., by John’s great-great grandfather Joseph Foster, John and Sue moved to East Topsham, where they raised Scotch Highland Cattle for almost 20 years at Twinflower Farm.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was in the Military Police while stationed on Okinawa.

He was a member of St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, Fairlee Vt. He served on the Boards of Brookhaven School for Boys in Chelsea Vt., and Northeast Highland Cattle Association. He was a longtime member of the Duxbury Cruising Club.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Sue Miller Foster; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert Lutz Foster and Faye Gorman Foster, Austin Nev., and Sea Island Ga; four children, John Miller Foster and wife Virginia Hansen Foster; Jane Foster, Hopkinton Mass., David Robert Foster, Providence R.I.; Christopher James Foster, Parsonsfield, Maine; and three grandchildren, David Edward Mahoney and wife Mikaela Bitner Mahoney, Richmond Texas, Abigail Marie Foster and Jeffrey Hansen Foster, Hopkinton Mass.

A celebration of his life was celebrated Jan. 21, at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, Fairlee, Vt. Hale Funeral Home, Bradford, Vt., served the family.

There will be another celebration of John’s life at the farm this summer. Details for this gathering will follow later in the year.
