Five years, five winners of the Chocolate City Show Choir Showcase.

Well, five titles, anyhow – all to the same school.

With a performance based on the musical “Newsies,” the Mayville Cardinal Singers won their fifth straight title at the showcase Saturday at Burlington High School. It was also the fifth year of the event.

“I am excited, grateful, and humbled to be a five-time grand champion,” said Mayville director Todd Kruger. This year’s show was a reprise of the director’s first-ever grand championship title.

“Brings back good memories,” Kruger said.

The event drew 14 choirs from 12 different schools. Making it to finals were Eisenhower (from Blue Island, Ill.), Brodhead, Milton Choralation, Hamilton Synergy and Parkview.

Eisenhower finished as first runner-up. Brodhead, Milton, Hamilton and Parkview followed in order.

Burlington’s show choir, performed in exhibition at the end of preliminaries. Director Penny Yanke was happy with her group’s performance, and also with the day’s work.

“The day was a success and I already received confirmation from some of the new groups that they will be back next year,” Yanke said.
