County Board joins Kenosha casino chorus

The Racine County Board on Tuesday passed a resolution in support of the Menominee Tribe’s Hard Rock Casino.

The Racine County Board on a 17-1 vote Tuesday reiterated its support for a new $800 million casino to be built at the former Dairyland Greyhound Park in Kenosha.

The County Board joins the chorus of state and local legislators who have urged Gov. Scott Walker to reverse his decision against the casino. The issue was thrust to the forefront again this week when officials with the Menominee Tribe and Hard Rock Casino – which will operate the facility – announced they will contribute $220 million toward the construction of a new arena for the Milwaukee Bucks in Milwaukee. The proposal, if accepted, would essentially eliminate state taxpayer contributions to the arena project.

Walker’s Administration Secretary Mike Huebsch indicated the governor’s decision is final, but Walker – who is on a week-long economic development visit to England – has not spoken directly on the matter since the proposal was announced.

The County Board’s resolution again expresses support for approval of the casino due to its perceived positive economic impact on the area, including jobs for Racine County residents.
