A thief broke into the City of Burlington fire station last weekend and stole a defibrillator, among other things, leaving at least one rescue squad member baffled.

Jeff Koenen, captain of the Burlington Area Rescue Squad, said the investigation is ongoing through the City of Burlington Police Department, and admitted to being puzzled by the break-in.

“I’m still trying to figure out why we were targeted,” he said.

Police Chief Peter Nimmer confirmed Wednesday that a blue rescue squad coat, a defibrillator unit, radios and a winch were taken.

“At this point, we are looking at all investigative leads that we have,” said Nimmer, who refused to comment on any possible suspects or motives.

The thief or thieves had no interest in other firefighting equipment.

“We have nothing from the fire side missing,” said Fire Chief Dick Lodle.

The theft occurred late Friday night or early Saturday morning.
