The Racine County Sheriff’s Department reported shortly after 2:30 p.m. Monday that the search for Stantavious Armond Sillas, 20, ended in his apprehension. According to a release from the Sheriff’s Office, county investigators working with Racine Police K-9 units and Mount Pleasant police officers tracked  Sillas to where he was hiding in the 5300 block of Taylor Avenue in the Village of Mount Pleasant.   Sillas was identified while hiding in a set of bushes, and subsequently apprehended. He later died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Five Union Grove-area schools were closed Monday morning as a precaution while the Racine County Sheriff’s Department searched for Sillas, whom they believed to be armed and dangerous. Before his capture, the sheriff’s department had advised area residents to remain in their homes, and call 911 if they saw the suspect.

According to the Racine Journal Times, police became involved following a report of an abduction at Lakeview Rehabilitation Hospital outside Waterford Sunday afternoon, which was followed by an incident at the Piggly Wiggly shopping center parking lot in Union Grove.  The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported the suspect, subsequently identified as Sillas, fired a gun at a sheriff’s deputy at the shopping center before fleeing, touching off the manhunt that continued into Monday afternoon.

The Racine County Sheriff’s Office reported its investigation continues.
