Shepherds College instructor is 2015 special ed Teacher of the Year

Shepherds College instructor, Erin Luchterhand, was recently honored as one of Exceptional Parent Magazine’s 2015 teachers of the year in the field of special education.

The magazine, with a readership of more than 500,000, is the nation’s oldest and most respected monthly publication serving the special needs community.

Luchterhand is the co-creator and lead instructor for Ai Academy at Shepherds College in Union Grove. She was selected as an outstanding Teacher of the Year from hundreds of nominees, based on her extraordinary compassion, creativity and dedication for her students with intellectual disabilities.

In the Ai Academy program, Luchterhand teaches students with the greatest learning challenges by presenting information in multiple ways that allow for consideration, exploration and maximum student understanding.

In her drive to help each student learn and grow, she has developed tools based on her observation of each individual and even wrote her own curriculum.

“While I love many things about what and where I teach,” said Luchterhand, “it is the students I love the most. I am blessed to have relationships with each student and their families as well as the support of my wonderful co-workers.”

Shepherds College, the nation’s leading three-year, post-secondary school for young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It is well-known in the field for the high quality of their instructors, after having won the 2013 Exceptional Parent Magazine Teacher of the Year Award and receiving the highest rating possible in the Teaching and Learning standard during a review by an accreditation team in 2011, a rare achievement for a relatively new program.
