Family deals with tragic loss of son

Robert Gueldenzopf is dealing with the death of his stepson, Aaron Davis, as best as can be expected under such trying circumstances.

Davis was killed in an alleged drunken driven incident April 11 in St. Petersburg, Fla., while walking to a parking garage after finishing work for the night at The Kitchen – a restaurant where he was executive chef.

Davis’s wife, Ana, gave birth to the couple’s second child – a son – just two days later.

Gueldenzopf said he and his wife, Karen – Aaron’s mother – were working their way through everything this week, as was Ana.

“It’s just an emotional time for Ana,” he explained. “But she’s got friends close, and two kids to raise. She’s slowly putting together a plan, and figuring out what she has to do.”

Gueldenzopf said Ana Davis is on maternity leave, which is giving her the time to sort through what’s coming in the future. Robert and Karen are still in Florida helping out.

While a private gathering is planned for family and friends, a specific benefit in the Burlington area has not yet been set.

There is a benefit planned for May 1 in St. Petersburg, for both Aaron Davis and Brian LaChance – the coworker Davis was walking with when the suspected drunken driver hit them.

LaChance has been discharged from the hospital, but medical bills need to be addressed. The fundraiser will be held at Jannus Live in St. Petersburg. Donations will be accepted, and more information is available by calling (727) 565-0550.

The criminal case is also proceeding against Jason Lanard Mitchell, who allegedly blew through a red light at and estimated 80 mph before hitting the two men.

Mitchell is facing a number of charges, and according to Robert Gueldenzopf, will be having a bail reduction hearing in the next week.

Gueldenzopf said the reality of the situation, though, is that he and Karen feel no hatred toward the man.

“We’re not feeling anything toward this guy,” Robert said. “Let the courts sort it out.”
