The Burlington High School girls soccer team came in second May 2 in the Racine County Invitational –a finish that is the program’s high-water mark in the tournament.

“That’s the highest we’ve ever placed as a program,” Demons coach Joel Molitor said. “We played really well against Waterford and St. Cat’s, and I thought we were unlucky not to beat Prairie, too.”

The Demons played Badger (2-3-5, 0-1 SLC) Tuesday at home and play today at Union Grove (8-3-1, 1-0 SLC) in Southern Lakes Conference matches. The Demons play Wilmot (3-2-4, 0-2 SLC) at home May 12 in a SLC match.

Burlington and The Prairie School of Wind Point played to a 0-0 tie in regulation. The Hawks (5-5-2) won 3-2 in a shootout.

“We hit the crossbar and the post on two separate occasions, and I thought we were the better team for stretches of the championship game,” Molitor said.

The Demons defeated St. Catherine’s 4-3 in a shootout after tying at 1-1 at the end of regulation earlier in the invitational.

Burlington opened the invite with a 2-0 victory against Waterford. Merin Mundt scored against St. Catherine’s (7-1) and tallied both goals against Waterford (8-3-1).

The Demons beat Delavan-Darien 7-1 in a SLC game April 30 at Delavan.

“We looked really good against Delavan,” Molitor said. “That’s the game where our offense started to click.”

Mundt scored four goals, Morgan McCourt two and Ashlyn Barry one against Delavan-Darien (4-4-1, 1-1 SLC). The Demons led 4-1 at halftime.

Burlington defeated Janesville Craig 1-0 April 28 in a non-conference game at Craig (2-8-3). McCourt scored the game’s only goal in the first half.

“I’m really proud of the work the girls have put in the last ten days,” Molitor said. “We’ve had a couple of really good practices, and they are building each other up on the field. I like that we’ve been able to stay very positive.”
