The Racine County Sheriff’s Department confirmed Tuesday that the driver killed on Highway 75 in a crash early Sunday was 72-year-old Larry L. Burchell of Yorkville.
The crash occurred at about 5 a.m. Sunday when the driver of a Ford Escape fell asleep at the wheel and drifted into the southbound lane of traffic on Highway 75. Burchell tried to avoid the crash, but was still struck. The crash forced him into a ditch, and the vehicle caught fire.
Burchell was trapped in the vehicle in the ditch. By the time Racine County Sheriff’s deputies got to the scene, the vehicle was completely engulfed.
