The Burlington Area School District and the teachers union Burlington Education Association exchanged initial proposals Monday night in contract negotiations.

Both groups are seeking a 1.62 percent increase in wages, but BASD Superintendent Peter Smet said there are “some nuances being discussed.”

“According to the Wisconsin statute, what is a negotiable item is the distribution of the cost of living,” Smet explained. “How is the increase distributed?”

The proposals were exchanged in open session, and then the two groups went into closed session to discuss the projects.
