City delays squad car purchase

With the City Council battling concerns about finances in the future, it unanimously approved replacement of one but not both of the planned police vehicles this year.

Two vehicles were budgeted for replacement this year, both Ford Police Interceptor Utility vehicles. The cost would be $27,494 each.

However, after listening to both the 2014 audit report and a report on the closing of the city’s TIF projects (see story on page 1), the council questioned whether it had to replace both vehicles this year.

“Just because we have the money doesn’t mean we need to spend it this year,” said Alderman Ed Johnson.

The city will keep the vehicle with fewer miles, and put the money aside in case the other vehicle fails.

The City Council also unanimous approved:

  • A contract with Northern Illinois University Center to conduct the city’s 2015 strategic planning session;
  • The acquisition of an abandoned gas station property at 256 West State Street adjacent to B.J. Wentker’s restaurant;
  • An intergovernmental agreement with the Town of Burlington for the operation of the Burlington Cemetery;
  • An easement agreement with Labadie Investments, LLC, that will allow the city to extend utilities to the Aurora care center project and provide utilities to the adjacent Labadie dental clinic project;
  • A change order to work at Wehmhoff-Jucker Park for a total of about $3,213; and
  • The annual compliance maintenance report.
