A new principal will greet students when they return to St. Thomas Aquinas School in September.

Julie Lobitz, once a standout basketball player and then a physical education teacher, decided to make the jump to administration when she was looking for a new challenge.

“I think I did everything I wanted to do in that area of expertise,” Lobitz explained. “I wanted to see the school as a whole.”

She began her duties at the school in June.

She has been in education since 1992, moving from Ohio to Wisconsin. She previously worked at Holy Apostles in New Berlin.

She went back to Marion University to earn her master’s degree in 2007. She wanted to stay in a Catholic school system, she said.

It will be her first year as a principal. Before she came to St. Thomas to interview for the job, she came to the church to celebrate mass and participate in a spaghetti dinner.

“I was already kind of sucked in,” Lobitz said. “What a great community.”

Her impression of the school and the staff so far is that both possess great deal of passion, community and Catholic identity.

She added that there is a great bond between the church and school, fostering learning through the lessons from the Bible.

“We really need to have some consistent leadership, to say we want to move this school forward,” she said, adding that the school performance should match its passion.
