“You don’t bring that up out in public, dude, you just don’t,” said radio personality Bill Michaels Monday morning on his show in reference to my story about a coach’s controversial use of the word “Caucasian” during Friday night’s Burlington High School football game.

Late Monday morning, I had the privilege of joining the Bill Michaels Show on 105.7FM The Fan, 1250 on the AM dial.

We discussed the racial implications of Racine Horlick head football coach Brian Fletcher’s comment, which was used while a player, Burlington’s Jake Weidert, just so happened to be laid out on the field  after a  helmet-to-helmet. Weidert avoided a concussion and serious injuries and will likely be cleared to play again soon.

Horlick’s players showed nothing but class, telling the injured player “we will pray for you” and “good game” as he was carted away on the stretcher.

I found out today Coach Fletcher expressed his best well wishes to the Weidert family after the game.

“I’m feeling better,” Weidert said Sunday. “Still a stiff neck, though.”

When asked if he was going to play football again, Weidert didn’t hesitate.

“Yeah, I can’t wait to get back out there.”

I appreciate and am grateful for all of the feedback on this story, positive and negative.

I stick by my stance that the use of the word “Caucasian” was wrong and had no place in a high school football game, but I have much more of an overall perspective now.

I will be reaching out to Fletcher and Racine Horlick Athletic Director Joe Wendt for their sides of this developing story.

Check out Thursday’s Burlington Standard Press, Waterford Post, Westine Report (Union Grove), Elkhorn Independent and Westosha Report for more on this topic.
