For the first set Saturday night, the Union Grove Union High School girls volleyball team looked just a touch out of sorts.

Playing Greenfield for the WIAA Division 1 regional title, the Broncos trailed 7-3 early as the Hawks took to tipping the ball for easy kills.

But after working through the struggles, the Broncos escaped with the first set, and then rolled to a 25-22, 25-11, 25-15 victory.

The win pushed Union Grove into the sectional semifinals for the sixth straight year, where they were set to face a familiar opponent Thursday – Muskego.

After working through the issues in the first set, the two teams exchanged points to open the second. Then the Union Grove serve rotated to Becca Borowski. The sophomore picked up numerous aces in a 15-point Union Grove run, and the Broncos cruised from there.

“She definitely rattled them with her serve,” said Union Grove coach Annie Sireno. Borowski finished the night with eight aces.

The Broncos rode a two-pronged attack to the win, as Frankie Pettit finished with a team-high 13 kills and Kylie Wilks had 11. Wilks added 13 digs, while Brynn Hetland had 29 assists and 11 digs. Libero Kelley Becker had 10 digs.

The win against Greenfield set the Broncos up for a rematch of last year’s sectional final, where Union Grove fell in five tight sets to the eventual state runner-up, Muskego.

The match was scheduled to start at about 7 p.m. Thursday after the finish of the Greendale vs. Waterford match.

Sireno said she was excited to play the Warriors again, although the two teams have met already this year.

“We saw them at the Sprawl and won,” the coach said. “We know they have some good players, so we need to execute our game plan so we can be successful against them.
