Burlington swimming sends four to state

The Burlington Co-op girls high school swimming team is making its much-anticipated return to Madison.

The Demons are competing in four events today and Saturday at the WIAA Division 1 Girls State Swimming and Diving Meet after a one-year hiatus. The state meet is at the University of Wisconsin Natatorium.

BC qualified for state Nov. 7 in competition at the WIAA Division 1 Greenfield Sectional Meet at Greenfield High School.

DeAnn Jones and Olivia Wanasek are each competing in three events at state. Morgan Traughber and Alyssa Hyland are each competing in two events.

DeAnn Jones is competing in the 50-yard freestyle and Wanasek is competing in the 200 freestyle in individual events for BC.

DeAnn Jones, Olivia Wanasek, Traughber and Hyland are each competing in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.

The winner of each event at each of the six Division 1 sectional meets and the next fastest 18 times statewide advanced from the sectional to the state meet.

“I just think it’s a really good experience for the girls,” BC coach Denita Jones said. “We’re going to go and have a good time.”

Denita Jones said the Demons are focusing on breaking several school records at state. In team standings the Demons finished third in the sectional with a total of 262.5 points. Badger Co-op won the sectional (328) and Kenosha Indian Trail finished second (266).

BC’s Olivia Wanasek won the 200 freestyle at Greenfield in 1 minute, 58.60 seconds. She finished second in the 500 freestyle (5:20.39).

“She just missed going in the 500,” Denita Jones said. “She wanted to go in the 500.”

DeAnn Jones finished second in the 50 freestyle (24.67 and swam with Olivia Wanasek, Traugher and Hyland on BC’s second-place 400 freestyle relay (3:39.97) and fourth-place 200 freestyle relay (1:41.32).

Traughber finished third in the 100 backstroke (1:00.37). Hotvedt finished sixth (1:05.24).

Hyland finished sixth in the 200 individual medley (2:15.03) and eighth in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.21).

Devon Wanasek finished ninth (2:20.11). Traughber finished sixth in the 100 butterfly (1:00.89).

Jenna Hotvedt finished fifth in the 500 freestyle (5:24.33) and DeAnn Jones finished seventh in the 100 freestyle (54.86).

Hotvedt, Maddi Haas, Devon Wanasek and Olivia Piccione finished eighth in the 200 medley relay (2:00.32).

Piccione finished 10th in the 50 freestyle (26.42) and 100 freestyle (58.36).

Kristen Goetzke finished 12th in the 200 freestyle (2:11.55). Devon Wanasek finished 14th in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.26).

Goetzke finished 17th in the 500 freestyle (6:03.05). Haas finished 18th in the 100 butterfly (1:08.94) and 19th in the 100 breaststroke (1:16.85).
