PATRICK M. LLOYD

Easter Lily      Patrick ‘Pat’ Mose Lloyd, 85, formerly Burlington, died peacefully in Madison, on Nov. 14, 2015.

He was born March 5, 1930, in Berlin, Wis., Town of Aurora, to the late Louis Lloyd and Margaret (Hoppa) Lloyd. He was raised on the farm in Berlin, went to grade school in a one-room schoolhouse and graduated from Berlin High School in 1947. He attended Ripon College on a scholarship where he lettered in track and field.

He met his wife Pauline ‘Polly’ (Bellar) Lloyd while serving in the U.S. Air Force at Barksdale AFB, La. They were married on Jan. 3, 1953. After 62 years of marriage, she preceded him in death in April of 2015.

He graduated magnum cum laude from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1957, and was subsequently appointed to the Order of Coif Honorary Society. Pat and Polly moved to Burlington in 1957 where they raised their three children and he practiced law for 50 years as a partner in the firm of Lloyd, Phenicie, Lynch and Kelly. He was also the Burlington city attorney in the early 1960s and a member of the Racine County Planning and Zoning Commission. He was a lifelong member of the Wisconsin Bar and brought one case before the Supreme Court of Wisconsin.

He was a member and chairperson of many boards in his community including Bank of Burlington, M&I Bank where he was Chairman of the Board for many years, Burlington Memorial Hospital, Rotary Club, where he was appointed president and eventually district governor, VFW post 2823 reconstruction, American Legion Post 79 and the Knights of Columbus. He was very active in his church; St. Mary’s and chaired the committee for the restoration of the church following a disastrous fire in 1977. He was a principal fundraiser for the schools and various restorations on the St. Mary’s campus for many years and most recently, Catholic Central High School. He also was a founding member of the Catholic Central Roundtable at St. Mary’s. He received an award for distinguished service to the community by then Gov. Warren Knowles. Pat was a longtime member of the Berlin Conservation Club and the Berlin Historical Society.

Pat and Polly were avid Marquette University Men’s Basketball supporters and traveled with the team and coaches for many years, around the United States, as a member of the Presidents Club and Minutemen. He often cited the road to the NCAA national championship by Marquette in 1977 as one of the most exciting times in his life. Pat enjoyed antiquing, collecting, playing cards and spending time with family and friends. He particularly cherished time with his family at his home in Berlin.

Survivors include his children, Dr. Patrick (Dr. Joyce Palik) Lloyd, Columbus, Ohio, Edyie (Dr. David) Walther, Madison, and Michael (Heidi) Lloyd, Burlington; grandchildren, Heather (Jim) Zanek, Bryan, Texas; Shannen (Jason) Utley, Tomball, Texas; Paulina (Michael) Erdman, Des Moines, Iowa; Chris (Julie) Lloyd, Tomball; Lori (Nicholas) Venturella, Madison; Adam Walther, Madison; Aaron (Justina) Lloyd, Houston, Texas; Abbey (Kevin) Kaszubowski, Oconomowoc; Luke (Lindsey) Lloyd, Houston; James (Kayla) Lloyd, Chicago; Paul Lloyd, Burlington; 15 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ruth Krause, Berlin.

He was further preceded in death by a brother, George, and his sisters, Gen Pribnow, Lois Wagner, Florence Stickney and Orpha Piekarski.

In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Pat and Polly Lloyd Fund for the benefit of Catholic Central High School.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the community at the Jefferson Independent Living Facility in Middleton, for their love and support. Also, to the caregivers from the Golden Heart Senior Care who cared for Pat, comforted him and made him laugh and smile.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, Nov. 20, 2015, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Jim Volkert officiating. Relatives and friends may meet with the family on Thursday, Nov. 19, from 4-7 p.m., at Schuette-Daniels Funeral Home, 625 Browns Lake Drive, Burlington, and also on Friday, Nov. 20, from 10-10:45 a.m., at St. Mary’s Good Shepherd Chapel. A private burial will take place in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

  1. I knew Mr Lloyd when he was the debate coach at st mary’s HS in the late 1960’s. He was a remarkable teacher, coach and friend to all of us. I now realize how much he gave of himself to us. May he rest in peace.
