Flood warning issued along Fox River

After nearly two inches rain fell on western Kenosha County Thursday, the National Weather Service on Friday in Sullivan issued a flood warning for areas along the Fox River near New Munster.

The Fox River, which was reportedly at 9-1/2 feet Friday morning, expects to a jump to 11 feet by early Saturday.

“The heavy rainfall we got yesterday led to the warning,” said NWS Meteorologist Sarah Marquardt, noting the Fox River was at 7-1/2 feet Wednesday.

Floodwaters are expected to affect yards and basements of homes in the Towns of Wheatland and Salem, along with the Village of Silver Lake

“We are expecting it to continue to rise to flood stage by this evening,” Marquardt said. “It will continue to rise through Sunday, cresting at 12.2 feet.”

Additionally, Marquardt anticipates local flooding of streets along the Fox River, which includes Highway 50 and Kenosha County Highway W.

However, residents should get a reprieve Monday with declining floodwaters.

The warning remains in effect through Wednesday.
