For Burlington’s new City Administrator Carina Walters, Friday’s Christmas parade will be her first.

Coming from Lake Forrest, Ill., she’s more used to tree-lighting ceremonies.

“I’m very excited,” Walters said. “It should be fun. I saw that chalet out there. I’m excited to see Santa.”

Santa will roll on into the city at the end of Friday’s parade, which is set to begin at 6:30 p.m. at Kane Street and Chandler Boulevard, and proceed through downtown Burlington via Kane Street, Milwaukee Avenue, Chestnut Street and Pine Street.

This year’s theme is “The Polar Express.” The weather, however, doesn’t look ready to back up the theme. Temperatures are predicted to be warmer than the last few years, with a high of 45 and a low of 28 – with clear skies.

“It’s going to be great,” said Mayor Bob Miller, who will march in the parade with members of the City Council. The parade will also features floats from area businesses, local fire, rescue and police units, as well as various service organizations.

Following the parade will be the annual opening of Santa’s Chalet, as well as a tree-lighting ceremony in Wehmhoff Square Park.

Other holiday events will continue on Saturday. Among them are:

  • Mrs. Santa’s pantry; 9 a.m.-2 p.m.; Community Baptist Church, 35512 Washington Ave. (Hwy. D), Honey Creek; cookies & candy $7/lb.; craft booths; lunch at Mrs. Santa’s Café; (262) 534-3585.
  • Cookie Walk; Burlington United Methodist Church, 857 W. State St.; 9 a.m.-noon; Kandy Kane gift lane; Angel’s Attic Resale; Jingle Bell Café; (262) 763-2288
  • Jubilate Novum carols and poetry past and present; directed by Anne Armetta; 7 p.m.; CATHE Center, 125 E. State St., Burlington; $8 adults; $4 students/seniors; free under 10; (262) 763-1709; (262) 539-2180.

Historical Society

On Sunday, the Burlington Historical Society will host its annual program starting at 1:30 p.m. in the Stars and Stripes Room at Veterans Terrace.

The program will feature a presentation by Wisconsin author Rochelle Pennington on “The Hidden History of Dickens’ ‘A Christmas Carol.’”

Love Lights

Another Burlington tradition is the annual “Love Lights” tree-lighting ceremony at Aurora Memorial Hospital of Burlington.

The Haylofters choir will provide music starting at 6:30 p.m., with the ceremony at 7 p.m. That will be followed by the tree lighting on Randolph Street.
