Argument leads to strangling charge

An argument between two friends went bad quickly Sunday as one Burlington man was arrested for allegedly strangling another.

Colten Ketchum, 22, was charged in Racine County Circuit Court Nov. 30 with felony strangulation and suffocation with domestic abuse assessments as well as a repeater clause. He is also facing misdemeanor domestic abuse battery charges, possession of drug paraphernalia and misdemeanor bail jumping.

According to the criminal complaint, City of Burlington police received a pair of 911 calls early Sunday morning regarding a fight at a residence on Donald Drive.

The police didn’t get anyone to answer the door or repeated calls, but the second 911 call said a front door would be open. Police entered through the unlocked front door.

According to the victim, Ketchum had been blaming him for the death of the victim’s brother. The victim responded by accusing Ketchum’s sister of being addicted to illegal drugs and performing sexual acts to get drugs.

The victim then said Ketchum had choked him twice, causing him to lose consciousness on both occasions.

The victim said that he had had a glass of wine (in violation of his probation), but Ketchum had been drinking heavily.

When questioned, Ketchum said the victim had bitten one of his fingers but wouldn’t give any further details. He was arrested and placed in handcuffs, and when he was searched, the officer allegedly found a pipe with a small amount of burnt marijuana in it.

While Ketchum was being transported to the police station, he allegedly made several threats against both the officer and the officer’s family, and continued to be uncooperative throughout the booking process.
