Town of Waterford residents living on County Road L received letters in the mail today from the United States Postal Service saying they have been using the wrong address and will have to change to addresses that use “Janesville Drive” as their street.

Waterford Town Clerk Tina Mayer said shocked when a resident brought a copy of the USPS letter to her office.

“I got a call from Sherry Conroy of the United States Postal Service last Thursday and she had questions as to whether County Road L was Janesville Drive,” said Mayer. “I told her I would have to verify it because it can get complicated when roads cross county lines and major highways.”

Mayer said she called the Real Estate Description Office at the Racine County Courthouse and they told her it was Janesville Drive. She then called Jeff Katz at the Waukesha County Department of Public Works and she says he told her it was Janesville Drive as well. County Road L is known also known as Janesville Road from Hales Corners to Muskego. It is unclear at this time if the road is actually named Janesville Drive once it crosses into Racine County.

Mayer said she let Conroy know it was Janesville Drive and that was the last she heard of it and thought the matter was taken care of.

“I was completely blindsided,” she said. “No one notified me this letter was being sent out or that this was even a problem. If I had known, I would have called the people affected.”

Mayer said she was looking into the issue and in the meantime, wanted residents to know that their ability to vote will not be affected by this.

Whether or not the residents will have to change their addresses is still unknown, but it should be noted that people living on that road use the County Road L designation from Waterford to as far as East Troy,  where it dead ends on North Street (Highway 20).
