Call it a miniature version of American Idol, if you will.

The Riverport Chorus will present Diva Quest 2012 Saturday at Waterford Union High School at 6 p.m. Ten area high school students will compete for a $1,000 scholarship and the “Diva” title.

The 10 finalists are: Rebecca Otis, Burlington High School; Julia Barrios, Burlington High School; Megan Kerkman, Kenosha Christian Life High School; Kristen Larsen, Kenosha Christian Life High School; Lisvette Duran, Delavan-Darien High School; Kendra Larson, Elkhorn Area High School; Allison Biesber, Mukwonago High School; Catherine Edgington, Shoreland Lutheran High School; Haley Miller, Racine Horlick High School; and Erin Horne, Wilmot Union High School.

More than 20 high-school age students auditioned for the chance to be a finalist in the program.

“I think with the popularity of the sing-off and American Idol, young women are really eager to showcase what they can do vocally,” said Rhonda Puntney-Gould, a member Riverport Chorus and the publicity manager for the group.

The format draws comparisons to American Idol because the winner is decided by the audience. All contestants will perform individually, but also with the Riverport Chorus – an area a capella barbershop quartet under the direction of June Berg.

In addition to Riverport Chorus and the Diva Quest finalists, the Marquette University Gold and Blue men’s a capella group will perform, as will 2011 winner Micah Gebel.

Dr. Steve Brown from Gateway Technical College will emcee the event.

“I’m really excited about it,” Puntney-Gould said. “I just think it’s a really good opportunity for these girls to sing, and a good opportunity for them to have their friends and family come to see them perform.

“It’s a chance for them to bond with the other girls who are competing, and a good opportunity for the Chorus to do some good out in the community.”

Tickets are $17 for adults in advance and $20 at the door, and $12 for students. Children younger than 5 years old will be admitted free. Tickets can be purchased online at the Riverport Chorus webpage at www.riverportchorus.org.
