Lincoln statue will return with fanfare

While City of Burlington police are still investigating the possibility of a second suspect, the city’s Abraham Lincoln statue will return to its pedestal this weekend after a brief absence.

The statue was pulled from its base by the Burlington Area School District administration building Jan. 30, landing in a pile of snow and bushes. It was sent out for repair work, and one man – Jacob Hinds, 22 – has been charged with felony damage to property over the incident.

Police will not comment on the investigation of a second suspect, but the statue will be welcomed back with a short ceremony Sunday afternoon.

The statue will be re-installed at the intersection of Kane and State streets at 2 p.m. Period music, Civil War re-enactors and guest speakers are on the program.

The eight-foot-tall statue, gifted to the City by Dr. Francis W. Meinhardt, was originally unveiled in October 1913. It was restored and rededicated in October 1995 and once again in May 2014.

Hinds, meanwhile, posted his bail Monday.
