Waterford gymnastics posts season high

The Waterford Union High School gymnastics team posted a season-high score and finished second Feb. 19 in the Southern Lakes Conference Gymnastics Championships at Burlington High School.

The Wolverines compete Saturday in a WIAA Division 2 Sectional Tournament ay Whitefish Bay High School.

Waterford finished with a team score of 132.675. Burlington Co-op finished first with a score of 134.375.

Burlington Co-op competes in Division 1 of the WIAA, and is comprised of athletes from Burlington, Catholic Central, Badger and Wilmot high schools.

Waterford competes in the WIAA’s Division 2 and consists solely of girls from Waterford Union High School.

“The gymnasts did an outstanding job at conference,” Waterford coach Carrie Rydzewski said. “The meet was closer than we thought. I was very happy to see we only lost by just over a point and a half.

“We had our season high score, which puts us in a great place for sectionals next week.

Competitors earned medals through fifth place. Waterford won nine individual medals.

Lauren Dziak finished second in the vault with a score of 9.2 and Rachel Szeklinski finished fifth (8.8) for the Wolverines. Isabel Saber finished eighth (8.4). Whitewater’s Kelly O’Hara won the event (9.225).

Saber finished second on the beam (9.0) and Dziak third (8.4). Amanda Whitford finished eighth (8.0) and Szeklinski 11th (7.75). O’Hara won the event (9.3).

Saber finished second (8.975) in the floor exercise. Szeklinski finished seventh (8.35). Dziak and Olivia Wegner tied for ninth (8.025). Burlington’s Sophia Ellsworth won the event (9.0).

Saber finished third on the bars for Waterford (8.45). Dziak finished eighth (7.85) and Szeklinski ninth (7.75). Lauren Muffick tied for 10th (7.65) for the Wolverines. O’Hara won the event (9.3).

Saber finished second in the all-around (34.825) and Dziak finished fourth (33.475). Szeklinski finished fifth (32.650). O’Hara won the event (35.775).
