It has been a difficult Southern Lakes Conference dual season for the inexperienced Union Grove High School wrestling squad. That continued Jan. 19 in a 60-18 loss at Delavan-Darien.

The Bronco boys won just four of the 14 matches while falling to 0-6 in the SLC. The team is 12-15 overall in dual matches this season.

Union Grove’s match wins came from Tanner Johnson at 106 pounds, Turner Albrecht at 126, Kyle Boeck at 170 and Cole Ryan at 285.

Johnson pinned Austin Schwarz in three minutes 34 seconds. Up until the pin, Johnson was involved in a seesaw match that was tied at 6-6. Johnson scored a reversal and in the process turned Schwarz onto his back for the pin.

“He’s starting to gain some more confidence,” head coach Andy Weis said.

Albrecht trailed Cody Chelminiak 4-3 late in the match before rallying for a 5-4 win. He scored the winning takedown with just seconds to go.

Boeck won a 3-1 decision in a match he led 3-0 after two periods. Weis noted that Boeck took advantage of his scoring opportunities.

Ryan moved up from his normal position at 220 to wrestle at 285, pinning his opponent in 1:24. After a takedown and near fall, Ryan got the pin.
