When Burlington High School senior Abby Korb first applied to attend the 2016 National 4-H Conference, she thought she’d be lucky just to win her county nomination.

“Honestly, when I applied, I thought I’d be honored just to get it at the county level,” she explained. “I never even thought that would happen.”

Now, Korb will join seven other Wisconsin youth who will travel to Washington, D.C. Saturday for a series of workshops, roundtable discussions, a town hall meeting and a chance to meet with state legislators during Capitol Hill Day.

Korb is currently ranked 26th in her class with a 4.0 grade-point average. She is planning on attending Ripon College for pre-med studies with a major in psychobiology and a minor in theater.

She hopes to become a pediatrician, crediting the time she’s spent in 4-H with the child development project as her inspiration.

“Through that project, I’ve really been able to develop my knowledge with children,” Korb said. “I always knew I wanted to be a doctor. This really helped me decide which specialty I wanted to go into.”

Korb belongs to Kan-Do 4-H, in Dover, and has been a member for nine years. Since its inception, the National 4-H Conference has served as an avenue to help its members and adult leaders to develop recommendations to guide 4-H on a national level.

Wisconsin 4-H Foundation is providing financial support for the Washington, D.C. delegation.
