Two area grade schools – one in Burlington, one in Waterford – were recently honored as Title I Schools of Recognition.

Burlington’s Cooper Elementary School and Waterford’s Trailside Elementary were each honored in March.

In order to be eligible for the award, schools must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a Title 1 school that serves a high number of economically disadvantaged students.
  • Earned a rating of significantly exceeds, exceeds, or meets expectations on the Wisconsin School Report Card
  • Must fall within the top 10 percent of Title I schools in Wisconsin experiencing student growth in reading and mathematics (elementary/middle schools) or top 10 percent of schools with greatest improvement in graduation rates (high schools);
  • Have minimal achievement gaps or show evidence of reducing gaps between student subgroups
  • Meet all test participation, absenteeism, and dropout Student Engagement Indicator goals.

Cooper is the latest Burlington school to receive the honor, as both Lyons and Waller Elementary schools have gotten it in the past.

“This is a great honor and I am very proud of the hard work our students and staff have done to accomplish this goal,” wrote Cooper Principal Christine Anderson. “We are thankful to our parents for the support in assisting their child in preparation for academic achievement and ensuring the furtherance of lifelong learning.”

Trailside Principal James Dembosky wrote, “Trailside is very proud of this recognition. It is because of the collaboration and dedication of the students, staff, and parents that we have achieved such great results. We strongly believe in the potential of all our students and will continue to strive to ensure their success. The Trailside community is so fortunate to have such a passionate and devoted group of professionals working with their children everyday.”

In addition, three Muskego schools were honored. Mill Valley, Country Meadows and Muskego Elementary schools all received the honor.

Each school’s staff was recognized at the state capitol in Madison March 14.

A third area school, Washington Caldwell, was also honored. A story on that award will appear in the April 29 Waterford Post.
