In an effort to help students who struggle as freshmen in high school, a new summer school class was approved Monday night.

A course called “High School Readiness” was unanimously approved by the Burlington Area School District Curriculum Committee, and will be sent to the full board for approval June 13.

The class will take students who have been identified as struggling students, at a skill deficit or are what Karcher Middle School Assistant Principal Matt Behringer called “reluctant learners” (an educational term for those who struggle) and put them through a three-week course prior to the existing “Summer Survivor” course.

In total, the two classes taken together will add up to a half credit toward graduation. The goal, Behringer said, is to bridge the gap between middle school and high school reading, writing and math expectations and give struggling students a head start.

“(The goal is to) expose our kids to as much as possible,” Behringer said.

The BASD Finance Committee started its review of the 2016-17 budget Monday night, but had to stop after about 30 minutes due to a scheduled closed-session meeting regarding student discipline.

The budget is still scheduled to come in balanced – with the potential jump of about $270,000 in expenditures – but Business Administrator Ruth Schenning had just started breaking down the various spending areas when the meeting was adjourned.

The Finance Committee will finish reviewing the budget at a June 6 meeting.
