For one half, it looked like the Burlington High School girls’ basketball team might be able to break their 12-game losing streak. That was because after the first half Tuesday, the Demon girls and Elkhorn were tied at 28 apiece.

The second half, though, was a different story, as the Elks outscored Burlington 30-13 on their way to a 58-41 win at Burlington.

Elkhorn outscored the Demons 18-8 in the third quarter to take a 10-point lead into the fourth that they continued to build upon.

As she has recently, Emily Golon led Burlington with 12 points. She was the only Demon with more than eight points.

With the loss, the Demons fell to 2-14 overall and 0-8 in the Southern Lakes Conference.

Vs. Westosha Central

“We missed 56 shots. That’s not going to get it done.”

Those comments by Gordon Nikolic, head girls basketball coach at Burlington High School, summarized a loss at Westosha Central Thursday.

The 57-47 SLC defeat was the 12th in a row for the Demon girls and kept them winless in SLC action.

The Falcons led 14-10 after one quarter and 29-21 at the half. Westosha then blew the game open with a 19-6 third-quarter margin to take a 21-point lead – 48-27 – into the final quarter.

Burlington did make a run in the fourth quarter, cutting the lead to eight with about a minute to go, but got no closer.

Golon led the Demons with 18 points.

“She’s doing well,” Nikolic said. “She’s getting her points. We just have nobody to complement her.”

Tori Rock did add 13 points for the Demons, with seven of those coming in the fourth quarter.

The Demon girls will host Waterford in an SLC game Friday in the school’s “Go Red” game to promote heart health.
