BASD cleaning up medication policies

The Burlington Area School District’s Policy Committee on Monday approved several changes to its policies.

The most changes were made with the district’s health care services policy, where updates were made to streamline a few processes.

The first change involves the reporting process now being made to the district’s Skyward student information program, as opposed to a daily log at each school.

The district is also going to one form for parents to fill out for any in-school medication – the Medication Administration Consent Form – which can be downloaded off the district’s website.

Prescription and non-prescription medications are also being separated, and wording changed so nurse practitioners and physician’s assistants can be noted as prescribing medication versus just doctor’s prescribing.

Another change is that students who require their first dose of medication of the day in the morning will be asked to get it at home before coming to school. District Nurse Jessica Polcyn said that new policy would be in place so the medication would have maximum effectiveness in a classroom situation.

All prescription medication changes must also now have a physician order.

Changes are also being made to the district’s key policy, in order to better control who has keys and to perform a yearly inventory, and to the facility usage policy to allow the district to recoup janitorial and supervision costs.

The facility usage policy along with the standing committee policy both had changes tabled due to wanting extra research time and a board member not being present, respectively.

A full list of the district’s policies can be found on the district website at www.basd.k12.wi.us under “Board of Education” on the left-hand side of the page.
