Mayor is recovering from ankle surgery

When Alderman Tom Vos was forced into his role of City Council president last week to run a council meeting, it was because Mayor Jeannie Hefty was recovering from surgery.

Hefty had surgery Aug. 11 to rebuild her right ankle, which collapsed, she said, due to years of stress after having to have her left ankle fused following an accident.

Hefty said she will be non-weight-bearing for a period of time, and out of the office until she is cleared by her doctor.

She is still working with city staff, just not by going into the office.

“We are having conference calls so I can be involved with meetings,” said Hefty, who was involved with one such meeting with the Community Pool Board this week.

“I know I will be much stronger coming back,” she added, saying she was looking forward to becoming an active member of the Burlington Rescue Squad again.
