The Waterford Union High School boys and girls cross country teams each finished in the top three Sept. 8 in the Southern Lakes Conference Relays at Badger High School in Lake Geneva.

The Wolverines’ next meet is Sept. 24 in an invitational hosted by Kettle Moraine High School at Naga-Waukee Park in Delafield.

Scoring in the SLC Relays is done by adding the top five times together for each team. The Waterford boys finished second with a combined time of 1:31.13 and the girls finished third with a combined time of 1:52.45.

Josh Butscher finished fifth in the boys five-kilometer junior/senior race in 17 minutes, 52.52 seconds. Adam Schubring finished sixth (17:52.83), Ian Marino seventh (17:56.28) and Sean Pritchard 11th (18:33.79) in the junior/senior race.

‘We ended with four in the top 11, which was one of our main goals,” Waterford coach Nate Schreiber said. “We are asking a lot out of Sean – to be able to attach to that pack – but I know he has the talent to do that.”

Hunter Karpinski finished fourth in the boys five-kilometer freshman/sophomore race in 18:57.68 to round-out Waterford’s scoring five.

For the girls, Haleigh Reindl finished seventh (21:56.19) and Alyssa Rohner eighth (22:04.01) in the five-kilometer girls junior/senior race.

“Alyssa Rohner was huge for us on Thursday,” Schreiber said. “She stuck with Haleigh and gave us an important boost. I see her only getting stronger from here.

“Jayda, Lexi, and Cassie all scored for us out of the freshman/sophomore race.”

Jayda Obluck finished fourth (22:17.46), Lexi Neubauer seventh (23:06.83) and Cassie Questad 11th (23:20.35) in the five-kilometer girls freshman/sophomore race.

Union Grove’s Riley McMahnon won the girls junior senior race (19:31.28) and Badger’s Amara Trent won the girls freshman/sophomore race (21:40.07).

Badger’s Gordillo Gustavo won the boys junior/senior race (17:06.55) and Loan Koehling won the boys freshman/sophomore race (18:26.03).

Badger won the boys and girls team titles. In the boys standings, Elkhorn finished third, Westosha fourth, Wilmot fifth, Burlington sixth, Union Grove seventh and Delavan-Darien eighth.

In the girls standings, Westosha finished second, Union Grove fourth, Burlington fifth, Elkhorn sixth, Delavan-Darien seventh and Wilmot eighth.

“I was extremely impressed with our improvement from last year,” Schreiber said of the Waterford girls. “We jumped up three places, and came close to beating Westosha.”
