Saturday wrestling – numerous wrestlers headed to state

Good afternoon, everyone, and welcome to today’s updates from the area individual wrestling sectionals. We are updating from finals now, courtesy of Track Wrestling. Information from earlier in the day is below:

106 – Burlington’s Ben Hornickle fell 10-7 to Bill Prochniewski of Waukesha South. Prochniewski is 45-0 and ranked No. 2 in the state. Hornickle did not have a wrestleback due to the fact he beat the third-place wrestler already, and Hornickle is qualified for the WIAA state tournament.

120 – Burlington’s Derek Gill and Waterford’s Kody Azarian go at it again, and again it ends in a tie. According to Trackwrestling, Gill gets the win in an 8-8 tie because of universal tiebreaking rules. Azarian appears to have a wrestleback for second place, so stay tuned.

126 – Union Grove’s Turner Albrecht lost his third-place match, and finishes fourth.

132 – In another Waterford vs. Burlington matchup, Waterford’s Cody Dolata defeated BHS’s Matt Ehlen, 10-2. By rule, Ehlen gets second, so both wrestlers are headed to state.

138 – Brody Fitzpatrick of Burlington was pinned in 1:25 by Andy Moyle of West Allis Hale, and will have a wrestleback with Austin Christenson of Waterford to determine the final state qualifier. Fitzpatrick beat Christenson last week at regionals, while Christenson beat Fitzpatrick at the Southern Lakes Conference tournament.

145 – BHS’s Willie Ehlen earns the team’s second individual title of the day, beating Whitnall’s Mason Howard 14-6 in the championship match.

152 – Cody Nannemann of Waterford lost by pin in 1:10 to Kyle Johnson of Waukesha South. Since he defeated the third-place winner in the semifinals, he earns second by rule – and a trip to the WIAA state tournament.

160 – Make that a third sectional title for the Demons, as Brandt Gavin wins 7-0 over Eric Vis of West Allis Central. Gavin had beaten Vis Tuesday in the team sectional, but just 3-2.

170 – Union Grove’s Kyle Boeck beat Burlington’s Jesse Busch 6-3 in overtime for third, but didn’t get the win he needed from Mukwonago’s Dave Unger and finished third by rule. Busch takes fourth.

182 – Burlington’s Ryan Jazdzewski is defeated by tech fall by Muskego’s Roland Dunlap, but earns second place by rule – and a trip to state.

195 – And we have the second sectional title of the day for the Wolverines, as Francisco Mata downed Waukesha West’s Nick Wall 5-3 for the title.

285 – BHS’s Neal Miller won his third-place match, but didn’t get a wrestleback as the loser in the championship had been the wrestler Miller lost to in the semifinals.

In wrestlebacks, Azarian won his match to advance at 120 pounds, while Fitzpatrick defeated Christenson 3-1 in overtime to earn the berth to state at 138 pounds. Max Fisher of Waterford lost his wrestleback at 145 pounds to Mason Howard of Whitnall.

Burlington has seven of the 13 wrestlers that qualified for the Waukesha West sectional through the championship match. Those wrestlers could still end up as low as third, depending on wrestlebacks. However, those seven wrestlers are also those still alive to qualify for state (the top two in each weight class go).

Waterford wrestlers through to the championship match are: Kody Azarian (120), Cody Dolata (132), Cody Nannemann (152) and Francisco Mata (195).

The following wrestlers won their first match, but lost their second:

Austin Christen, Waterford (138)

Lucas Shenkenberg, Burlington (113)
