Live from the Burlington gymnastics sectional!

Hi, everyone – this is Jennifer Eisenbart, and we will be bringing you updates today from the WIAA Division 1 Burlington gymnastics sectional. Because of the meet format, we will update at the end of each rotation, with a rough sketch of how the host team Burlington/Badger/Wilmot has fared – plus information on other teams if possible.

Please hit refresh often. The newest information will be at the top.

7:40 p.m. – Performance under pressure. After BBW’s first girl on bars struggled, the next four athletes hit cold, with all four scoring about 9.1. Bailey Fitzpatrick scored 9.55 and Jenna Fitzpatrick followed with a 9.65. BBW will win the meet after nailing its final two rotations.

7:10 p.m. – Frankego was solid on vault, with all counting scores between 9.3 and 9.475. However, after the vault rotation BBW had, the sectional title might be out of reach if BBW can hit bars.

6:45 p.m. – BBW is evidently subscribing to the “anything you can do,  I can do better” motto today. BBW’s scores on vault were 9.15, 9.30, 9.50, 9.525 and 9.825 – the last from Molly Benavides and a new career. It’s also the top individual score in the state this year. Total for BBW on the event? 38.15.

Frankego is on vault now, so we’ll see what they answer with. And Mukwonago/Kettle Moraine’s Natalie Strazewscki scored a 9.475 on bars, which should be good enough to qualify for state.

6:24 p.m. – One word for Frankego’s floor rotation: WOW. The squad had all five scores between 9.4 and 9.625, with the top mark coming from Lauren Zurowski.

Hailey Leinstein of Parker also had a hit beam routine in the rotation, which may be enough to get her a qualifying spot for state.

5:55 p.m. – BBW had a really solid floor rotation, with the lowest score being an 8.975. Freshman Molly Benavides went third and posted a 9.65, while Bailey Fitzpatrick anchored the rotation with a 9.50. So far, the scores have been high on floor overall, but those two are the highest.

BBW is now on a bye before vault, while Frankego is on floor.

5:28 p.m. – Frankego was solid on the balance beam in the second rotation, with a fall from its second athlete but four other hit routines. Frankego is on a bye in the third rotation, while BBW is on the floor exercise.

On vault, Kenosha Combined’s Krystal Evans, with a shot at qualifying as an individual on the event, hit a 9.30.

4:55 p.m. – The first rotation is finished, and both Frankego Whitcreek and BBW hit 4 of 5 on their first events. Sammie Olson of Franklin posted her team’s top bars score with a 9.30, while BBW’s last three beam competitors – Kerry Leonard, Molly Benavides and Bailey Fitzpatrick – went 9.25, 9.375 and 9.55.

Frankego is on beam in round two, while BBW is on a bye before the floor exercise.

4:20 p.m. – The teams just marched in. We will have introductions, the national anthem and warm-ups, with the meet beginning at about 4:30 p.m. BBW will start the meet on the balance beam, while the other favored team in the sectional, Frankego Whitcreek, will start on bars.
