It was an important week on the softball diamond for the Catholic Central Lady Toppers as ranked nonconference teams tested them during a busy stretch of games.

During the Poynette Jamboree on Friday, May 5 and Saturday, May 6, Catholic Central played against ranked Juda, Albany and Marshall as well as Wisconsin Dells.

“Playing good teams with good pitching is big going into postseason play,” said Head Coach Bill Greskiw.

Juda-Albany came out scoring, roughing up junior pitcher Sydney Robson for five runs in the first inning and seven runs total off of nine hits en route to a 9-2 victory.

The Lady Toppers had three errors, and Coach Greskiw admits, “We’ve struggled with avoiding big innings defensively.”

Game two against Marshall was similar. Six Catholic Central errors left the door wide open.

Robson gave up eight runs but only three earned.

Senior Haile Weis had a double and an RBI in the 9-3 loss.

But it was the game against Wisconsin Dells that got the Lady Toppers back on track.

“Seems like we waited for the last game to let it all out,” Greskiw said. “That included 17 total hits in the 13-3 win, seven of which were for extra bases.”

Freshman Christina Paleka proved she is someone to keep an eye on, throwing a two-hitter with seven strikeouts from the circle and going 5-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs.

Freshman Anne Fabiani, still injured from a previous home plate collision, found ways to get it done at the plate as the designated hitter. She went 4-for-4 with six RBI.

“All in all, the weekend was productive in that we got to play at a high level, and a number of issues became clear insofar as things we need to work on and improve.”

Januszewski, Sassano lead golfers

The Catholic Central boys golf team played in a few Metro Classic Conference Mini Meets in the past week, and a different sophomore golfer led the way in each.

At Meadowbrook on Monday, May 9, Doug Januszewski shot a 47, leading the Toppers to a sixth place finish out of nine teams. Racine St. Catherine’s took the meet.

Back on Wednesday, May 3 at Browns Lake Golf Course, it was Luke Sassano who led the team with a 46. Catholic Central finished seventh, while the Prairie School finished first.

Head Coach Matt DeLorme said, “We need to be more consistently in the high 40s as a team.  This will take us where we want to go.

Aldrich, Kleins pulling double duty

Senior Kelly Aldrich and sophomores Elizabeth and Emma Klein are finding a way to excel at both soccer and track and field.

The girls Catholic Central soccer team won a May 3 match against Racine Lutheran, 2-0, thanks to a goal apiece from the Kleins.

The 2017 Racine County Soccer Showcase included a 10-0 loss against Racine Horlick on May 5, but also a 4-0 win against Park on May 6.

In the win, Aldrich and Emma Klein contributed goals as well as junior Anna Hackbarth and senior Griselda Rebollar.

On the track, Aldrich and Elizabeth Klein took second-place finishes in the 100 meters and high jump, respectively. That was at the Friday, May 5 Martin Luther Spartan Invite.

Nevertheless, the girls finished sixth out of seven teams. The boys finished eighth out of eight.
